16th annual Bulldog Challenge is this Friday | Community Spirit
CHARLESTON (WCSC) - It's still not too late to register for The Citadel's 16th annual Bulldog Challenge, which will be held this Friday.
Not for the faint of heart, the challenge tests the physical limits of even the fittest and fiercest endurance competitors from across the Southeast.
The six-mile obstacle course, which includes challenges with intimidating names like “House of Pain” and “Guadalcanal,” stretches through The Citadel campus, parts of the City of Charleston, and even the gelatinous Lowcountry marsh.
Teams of four will slug through pluff mud, lug 25-pound sand bags, and chug up and down the steps of Johnson Hagood Stadium. Before reaching the finish line, participants have to haul water jugs, flip (very big) tires, climb ropes and even carry each other. There’s no cheating either: Citadel Marines and cadets stationed throughout the course will ensure all obstacles are properly executed to qualify for winners brackets.
And each and every one of the competitors will pay to be put through the pain, but it is for a good cause.
Over the years, these formidable contestants have helped to raise thousands of dollars for scholarships and charities selected by the Semper Fidelis Society, sponsor of the Bulldog Challenge, at The Citadel. Last year, the Bulldog Challenge raised more than $15,000 for the Warren A. Frank Leadership Memorial Fund to provide scholarships for future Marine officers at The Citadel.
Frank, a 2004 Citadel grad, died in combat in Iraq in 2008.
This year, proceeds from the race will go to create the Semper Fi Society Scholarship Fund to give financial aid annually to a participating member of the society enrolled in NROTC and working toward an officer’s commission.
The Citadel Semper Fidelis Society is comprised of cadets in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) unit and active duty members of the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP).
